Mr. Allen’s 8th grade social studies class participated in Shiloh’s annual 8th grade trip to Springfield, Illinois. They started the day with a tour of the Illinois State Capitol, where they were able to see the Chambers of the Illinois House of Representatives, learn the history of the Rotunda, and walk down the largest grand staircase in the country. After visiting the Capitol building, the 8th grade students walked to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library where they competed in a scavenger hunt to find the most information about Lincoln using only the many exhibits in the museum. They grabbed a quick bite to eat before making their way to Lincoln’s Tomb where they observed a moment of silence at Abraham Lincoln’s resting place and rubbed Lincoln's nose for good luck! The last stop before leaving Springfield was a visit to the Illinois War Memorials, where they read and reflected on the names of fallen soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. Our students were complimented several times in different locations about how respectful they acted and how nicely they were dressed. They represented Shiloh extremely well and their sponsors, Mrs. Mixson and Mr. Allen, couldn’t be prouder!

Today the junior high students had a Zoom call with Chikondi Chisale from Malawi. Chiko is originally from the region of Kusungu, Malawi which is where The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a book the eighth grade class just finished, takes place. The entire junior high read the book A Long Walk to Water, and while it takes place in South Sudan, one of the plots is about water scarcity—something people in Malawi know about all too well. Chikondi, a successful entrepreneur, hip hop artist, husband, father, and assistant to a high ranking government official, talked about typical life in Malawi and also shared his experiences overcoming hardships, his love of “football” (aka soccer), and the importance of hard work. Our students were attentive, respectful, and asked great questions. Thanks, Chiko!

From Climate Action Schools: "Deserving of recognition is Shiloh School in Illinois, USA where creativity and collaboration have been at the forefront of environmental education. The recent Scavenger Hunt in the schoolyard, led by Junior High students alongside their elementary counterparts, exemplifies the spirit of teamwork and exploration that defines our school community. Together, they embarked on a journey to discover and appreciate the natural wonders around them, fostering a deeper connection to the world we inhabit. Furthermore, the critical examination of both the original and new Lorax movies serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and the impact of our actions on future generations. By engaging in meaningful dialogue and reflection, Shiloh School continues to instill values of responsibility and empathy in our students, preparing them to become informed and compassionate global citizens. As we celebrate the achievements of...Shiloh School, let us also reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability and stewardship in our schools and communities."

Partnership in Parenting celebrated spring at their April group connection with a chick theme. Miss Katrina started eggs in her incubator back on March 28. What fun the PIP-Squeaks had in learning about the hatching process! The first thing the children learned (and heard) was that chicks cheep inside their shells when they are very close to hatching. Another fact they learned is that not all chicks are yellow. Miss Katrina read the book "Busy Chickens" by author John Schindel and photographer Steven Holt. The non-fiction book helped the children learn new words about things chickens do, like leaping and squawking. They also explored the pictures to see how many different colors chickens can be and that some have wacky feathers around their heads and feet. The children made their own chickens to take home, first by having their hands traced to create the body, then adding eyes, a beak and legs. Before leaving, everyone enjoyed a snack of adorable chick cupcakes made by Miss Teresa.
